Coastal Resilience and Regional Adaptation

Coastal Resilience and Regional Adaptation

In partnership with MCAS Beaufort and the state of South Carolina, Marines volunteered to assist installation staff construct a living shoreline with oyster shell and bamboo stakes donated by the state government at the station’s Laurel Bay Boat Ramp.

Description

As sea-level rise, heightened storm damage, and water availability are intensifying, states, communities, and military installations are assessing vulnerabilities, managing risks, and adapting to changing environmental conditions. The Marine Resilience and Regional Adaptation team works to share and serve as a repository for up-to-date information, address common regional issues, coordinate cross-state coastal management approaches, and promote disaster-resilient communities.

For example, the principals of SERPPAS saw a need for a Living Shorelines Working Group because estuarine shorelines are some of the most ecologically and economically valuable natural habitats in the southeast and world. They provide critical habitat for fish and wildlife, and extremely valuable real estate for a wide variety of land uses including military operations. Sea-level rise, heightened storm damage and ongoing waterfront development are intensifying pressure to protect estuarine shorelines, and all these factors make living shorelines and other "natural" coastal protection measures an emerging issue that demands the attention of SERPPAS. SERPPAS is interested in exploring wider use of living shorelines at those military installations where estuarine shorelines and the adjacent estuarine habitat could be benefited and the military's long-term ability to use the property appropriately would be protected and enhanced.
